David Rudnick

Booklet design

Objective

Create a booklet showcasing a recognized and renowned graphic designer of your choice, presenting information in a visually compelling and organized way. Create at least one original work inspired by this designer to use in this booklet.

Summary

I chose David Rudnick, known for his bold, neon designs for electronic music albums and concert posters. I was drawn to his surreal, eyestrain-y style and aimed to reflect that same visual intensity in my booklet.

Sketches

For my booklet, I aimed to capture the bold, neon aesthetic that defines David Rudnick’s work. His designs are strange, trippy, and unapologetically in-your-face, an aesthetic I’ve always been drawn to. I wanted to channel that same visual intensity through layered type, gritty textures, and vibrant color.

Rudnick primarily designs for the music industry (album covers, concert posters and more), which is a field I’d love to pursue myself one day, making him a natural choice for this project.

Self portrait

A requirement for this project was to create at least one original piece inspired by my design hero’s work. Since Rudnick primarily designs concert posters, I created one of my own for a concert I had recently attended, drawing from his bold, experimental style. I also took a self portrait and edited it in a way that mirrors Rudnick’s neon, high contrast, and color saturated aesthetic.

Exploring Rudnick’s style through these designs was a fun, creative challenge that pushed me outside my comfort zone, and reinforced my desire to one day design for the music industry as well.
